Dear Colleagues

SOS 2020 campaign – Protest in constituency of Scottish Secretary, David Mundell MP, Lockerbie Friday 15th June

Further to circular no. NP/050/18 of 9th March 2018, the next SOS 2020 campaign action will be held on Friday 15th June, outside Lockerbie Town Hall, where the Secretary of State for Scotland, Rt Hon. David Mundell MP will be holding a constituency surgery.

The demonstration on 15th June will start at 10.45am, Lockerbie Town Hall, High Street, Lockerbie DG11 2ES. Minibus transport from the RMT Office in Glasgow, 180 Hope St G2 2UE, will be provided depending on numbers. To book a seat on the minibus contact 0141 332 1117.

The union will use this demonstration to put political pressure on the Scottish Secretary to support the SOS 2020 campaign for an end to discrimination against seafarers and for application and enforcement of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) in the domestic shipping industry, starting on UK-UK routes and from UK ports to offshore energy installations.

At present, Scottish, Irish and UK Ratings are excluded from jobs on merchant ships working on routes from Scottish ports to Northern Ireland and to offshore oil and gas installations, due to employers profiting from undermining the NMW and Government failure to enforce it for seafarers.

Leaflets, flags and other regalia will be distributed on the day. Shipping and offshore members and activists are strongly encouraged to attend this demonstration calling for action against employers that continue to discriminate against seafarers across the shipping industry. The cost of attendance is a legitimate form of Branch expenditure.

I would be grateful if you could bring the contents of this circular to the attention of members in your branch and you will be kept updated with all further developments.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash

General Secretary
