SOS 2020 campaign – Demo against Streamline Shipping, Aberdeen

Circular No: NP/055/17

Our ref: S1/1/17

10h April 2017

Dear Colleagues

SOS 2020 campaign – Demo against Streamline Shipping, Aberdeen

Further to circular no. NP/053/17 of 4th April 2017, further details of the demonstration in Aberdeen Harbour against Streamline Shipping have been confirmed.

The demonstration will take place on Friday 21st April, from 11.45am at Aberdeen Harbour, Blaikies Quay/Black’s Lane, Aberdeen, AB11 5PU. A map is attached and can be downloaded here:

Streamline currently employ Lithuanian and Latvian Ratings on the Cyprus-registered MV Daroja on basic hourly rates of pay as low as £2.56, barely a third of the National Living Wage of £7.50 p.h. In doing so, the employer is discriminating against European seafarers, avoiding UK employment law, undermining terms and conditions in the Scottish ferry industry and wrecking the national maritime skills base.

This chronic exploitation and irresponsible employment practice also props up Streamline’s profits, including dividend payments of over £2.1m in recent years. Your union is clear that extra freight capacity to Orkney and Shetland must be contracted and operated in the public sector as part of a nationalised NorthLink contract.

I urge members and activists to attend this important demonstration, the cost of which is a legitimate form of branch expenditure. Your continued engagement and support for this demonstration and future SOS 2020 campaigning activity is essential and greatly appreciated.

I would be grateful if you could bring the contents of this circular to the attention of members in your branch and you will be kept updated with further developments.

Yours sincerely
Mick Cash
General Secretary
