National Policy Circular NP/036/15/BO
To the Secretary all Branches in London & Anglia, London Transport, South East and Wessex Regional councils, Council of Executive Members, Regional Offices.
Dear Colleagues,
Support Kent Workers May Day Rally 4th May 2015
The memory of the historic miners’ strike has been kept alive through the hard work and determination of the community groups within the villages that surround the former Kent coal mines. RMT in this year, the 30th anniversary of the return to work following the great strike, is fully supporting the above event which will take place in Aylesham in Kent on May 4th 2015.
Recently released cabinet papers not only confirm what we all knew at the time that this was not just an industrial dispute, but a political one as well. It was right to stand up and fight for jobs, communities and a way of life then and it is just as important to do it today, especially in the face of an onslaught even worse than we faced under Thatcher. By celebrating our past, we build unity and solidarity for the future battles against austerity that we all face.
That is why the Council of Executives have agreed to support this important event and publicise it amongst all branches in the area. Branches can help towards the financial cost of organising the day by making donations and by also encouraging all members to attend. Cheques should be made payable to SEKTUC and sent to RMT Office, Snargate Street, Dover, CT17 9BZ.
This promises to be a great way for everyone to celebrate workers day and I will circulate further information as and when it becomes available. For now circulate details and claim this date in your diary. Support Kent Workers May Day rally in whatever way you can.
Thanking you in anticipation
Yours sincerely,
Mick Cash
General Secretary
