Taxis - Law Commission

Dear Colleague,

TAXIS – LAW COMMISSION

The Law Commission is currently reviewing all legislation relating to taxi and private hire vehicles. Whilst this review, which officials claim is designed to simplify the legislation, could potentially deregulate the industry and as such is a threat to members’ livelihoods, it also presents us with a number of opportunities. These opportunities including the possibility of having plying for hire actually defined in law.

It is therefore requested that branches with taxi driver members discuss the current state of affairs within the industry and submit their collective views to the Union nationally. In particular I am eager to hear the views of branches as to the ways in which they feel legislation could be improved to protect their livelihoods and also ensure that there is a safe and properly regulated taxi service for the travelling public.

Please submit your comments to m.carty@rmt.org.uk

Yours sincerely,

Bob Crow
