Circular No: NP/038/19

Our ref: P/10

25th February 2019

Dear Colleagues

Unveiling of Blockade Runners to Spain Memorial, Glasgow 2nd March

After fifteen years of hard work by Glasgow Shipping Branch, a memorial to the British seafarers who broke the fascist blockade of ports during the Spanish Civil War will be unveiled in Glasgow this Saturday.

The Branch is inviting RMT members and activists to attend the unveiling of the new memorial on the Clyde dedicated to the seafarers who broke Franco’s blockade of Republican ports. Thirty-five merchant navy and eight Royal Navy seafarers died and scores were injured on vessels attacked by submarine, naval and aerial forces under fascist control between 1936-38. This memorial to seafarers will stand as renewed testimony to the importance of international solidarity in the face of fascist aggression.

The memorial is on the Clyde walkway next to the Jamaica Street bridge and will be unveiled by Glasgow Shipping Branch members at 12 noon, Saturday 2nd March.

This will be followed by music and entertainment at the Admiral Bar (72a Waterloo St, Glasgow G2 7DA), which includes local band The Wakes. I hope you can join us.

I would be grateful if you could bring the contents of this circular to the attention of members in your branch. You will be kept updated with further developments.
Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
