RMT is campaigning to reduce the unacceptable level of violence and abuse against staff and passengers on public transport.
For instance, two-thirds of RMT public transport members experienced violence at work in the past year and 70% think violence has increased.
Official figures recorded a 34% increase in staff assaults from Dec 25 to Feb 26 compared to the previous year.
RMT’s Action Against Assaults campaign is calling for:
- A significant increase in staffing across public transport, including an end to lone working. Safe staffing = Safe passengers.
- Stronger legal protections for public transport workers against assaults at work.
- Proper policing presence on all public transport, including reversing cuts to British Transport Police funding and staffing.
- An end to corporate profiteering on safety and security on public transport. Outsourced security and enforcement staff to be brought in-house.
On April 28th, RMT is holding a National Day of Action - we’re taking a stand against assaults on transport workers.
