Better Jobs, Better Services-End Rail Outsourcing

Better Jobs, Better Services-End Rail Outsourcing

RMT is campaigning to make the Labour government’s promised ‘biggest wave of insourcing for a generation’ a reality for rail workers.

The government’s pledge and the creation of an integrated publicly owned Great British Railways both mark a new stage in the struggle to end outsourcing.

Tens of thousands of workers are outsourced or sub-contracted on our railways, including cleaners, caterers, security guards, revenue protection and infrastructure maintenance, renewal and engineering workers.

Outsourcing and sub-contracting companies extract an estimated £400 million from our railways every year in profits, while workers struggle to make ends meet on precarious contracts, low pay and without a decent pension.

Better jobs would mean better services for passengers, while every penny spent on rail would go to frontline services not shareholders dividends.  Directly provided and integrated rail services deliver better safety, quality and value for money which is why on many parts of the network these services are already in-house or there are discussions about doing so.

RMT is fighting to create a single, integrated, publicly owned railway, with an integrated workforce. One railway – one workforce
