Message Content:I am writing to express my concern at the decision of Transport for London to remove all guards from London Overground trains.
As a passenger, I do not want to see the removal of guards from our trains.
I welcome the work of guards in helping ensure the safe operation of trains and also providing passenger assistance and reassurance. Guards are vital for to making women and disabled and older people more secure when using trains and providing with assistance with access on and off trains. Guards also play a vital role in protecting the train and providing critical safety support in emergencies..
It is for these reasons that passenger surveys consistently find that passengers want more visible staff on their trains and stations. And this is why there is broad support for retaining staff on trains from organisations as diverse as the Women’s Institute, National Pensioners Convention, Transport for All, Campaign for Better Transport, Passenger Focus and the TUC.
I am therefore very concerned that LOROL which operates London Overground rail services on behalf of Transport for London has announced that it intends to sack all its guards and run the trains as driver only operation.
I call on you to intervene to ensure guards are retained on London Overground services.
