The Government has announced that it will meet 80% of wages for employees, capped at £2,500 per month for employees who are ‘furloughed’ (not required to work but still employed) during the Coronavirus emergency.

However, it has not been confirmed that UK-based seafarers will qualify for this support and we have still not had any reply from Government to our enquiries on your behalf.

Employers will need to make wage payments to furloughed seafarers and claim them back from Government once the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme opens at the end of April, so we urgently need certainty.

Please contact your MP using the template letter to ask that they support RMT’s efforts to make sure that seafarers are eligible for full support from the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.
