As part of this, RMT Parliamentary Group member Karl Turner MP has tabled Early Day Motion 802 to highlight the union’s demand that UK ratings benefit from the training commitments in the Tonnage Tax, a scheme which has led to a six-fold increase in the number of UK registered ships and written off over £800m in tax for shipping companies but failed to arrest the long term decline in UK seafarer numbers.
RMT is working with Nautilus and the Chamber of Shipping to open up the core training commitments of the Tonnage Tax to include training for UK ratings. Such a reform would be a major step toward reversing the long term decline in deck, engine and catering rating numbers. EDM 802 has been signed by 48 MPs to date and increasing that number would apply useful pressure on the Government to act in favour of UK ratings through the Tonnage Tax.
