Retirement Courses - Regional Organising Template

Dear Colleague

The Council of Executives agreed that there should be a retirement course run in Regional locations of one day in duration.

The precise wording of their decision is as follows:

Further to Decision No. CE359, July 30th 2012, your Organisation, Training & Education Sub-Committee submits the following report:

“That we note the resolution and it is our view that the employers should be responsible to explain in detail to their employees information on retirement.

However, we believe that there should be a one day course in the regions on RMT activity promoting the RMT campaigns which affect the retired membership.

These courses should be held in conjunction with participation from the relevant RMT Retired Branch and we should aim to have these courses twice a year.”

Therefore it is suggested that a ‘course organising template’ be provided for regions to provide one day courses for their retired members. The Regional Council should consult with their Retired Members Committee when organising these courses to ensure the course content reflects the issues and problems that those retired members are facing. The course template is as follows:

• Regional Councils to consult Retired Members Committee’s on precise course issues to be covered

• Regional Councils to arrange local venue.

• Regional Councils to contact and arrange RMT lawyers for speaker.

• Education Dept. to supply RMT literature and appropriate forms, and RMT Lay Tutor

The course outline may follow the drafted timetable set out below, but should be agreed with retired members committee:

09.30hrs – Welcome and Intro’s

09.45hrs – RMT Campaigns + Pensions, Thompsons Lawyer and Tutor

Group exercise on “How can retired member branches get involved in the RMT Campaign”?

12.00hrs – Retired Member Branches – How can we make them more effective?

13.00hrs – Lunch

14.00hrs - Legal update on retired member issues

Thompson’s intro on legal issues, Tutor led exercise on what the effect on retired members is, how they can support RMT in the work to improve the legal protection for everyone

15.30hrs – tea/coffee

16.00hrs – Retired members and the Region

Tutor and Regional Official – Group exercise on “how do retired members work within the Region and Branches, is it as effective as it could be, how might it be improved”

17.30 – Course Close

The costs and expenses for organising and delivering these one day courses will be met by Head Office.

Yours sincerely
