WHAT IS IT?
The fund was established in 1977 in memory of former MNAOA General Secretary John William Slater. In the last 10 years over 1000 seafarers have benefitted and the value of the fund has increased from £2,500 to its present level.
CAN I APPLY?
If you’re a Merchant Navy rating considering career progression, the Slater Fund, managed by the Marine Society with Nautilus International, offers scholarships of up to £17,500 to help ratings study for a first certificate of competency or it can help Electro Technical Officers and yacht crew gain STCW 2010 certification.
HOW CAN I USE IT?
This scholarship can help offset the direct costs of obtaining a certificate of competency through any approved UK nautical college.
And to help fund the necessary courses and for help with accommodation, travel, learning resources and living expenses while you study. It can also be used to fund the cost of up-skilling in functional skills (eg Maths) which is offered by The Marine Society to those in need.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The scholarship is available for four years from the date of the award (you must start using it within two years of it being awarded) and is available to serving ratings over 20 years old permanently resident in the UK.
Financial help is available to British professional seafarers only, who are resident in the UK, is subject to status checks, and dependent upon the availability of funds.
