IMPOSITION OF 12-CAR DOO, DRIVERS, SOUTHERN/GATWICK EXPRESS SERVICES – GOVIA THAMESLINK RAILWAY
I write with regards to the above matter and to inform you that the RMT are in dispute with GTR over the company’s decision to implement a 12-car DOO operation on Southern/Gatwick Express services from the 9th April 2016 without agreement. As you are aware, it is RMT’s long standing policy for no extension of DOO on any route or service and for the Guard to be in full operational control of the power operated doors. Indeed, the RMT believes this is a clear attempt at the extension of DOO.
This matter has been subject to recent consideration by your union’s National Executive Committee who has taken the decision to ballot all our Train Driver members on GTR (Southern/Gatwick Express) for strike action and action short of a strike. The ballot for industrial action will open on Wednesday 20th April 2016 and will close on Tuesday 3rd May 2016. I ask all our affected members to stand united in this dispute. It is crucial that we show our strength of feeling to management by returning a massive YES vote in the ballot for industrial action when you receive your voting paper.
Additionally, I am seeking a meeting with our sister union ASLEF to discuss a joint approach on how we can oppose GTR’s plans to extend DOO and I will, of course, keep you fully advised on developments. In the meantime, I would be most grateful if you could contact the RMT Helpline on 0800 376 3706 if you have not received your voting paper by Wednesday 27th April 2016 to ensure your membership records are up-to-date.
