First of all let me congratulate all of you on the recent ballot, you produced an excellent result and you should be commended for standing together in solidarity. Over 80% voted YES for strike action and 92% voted YES for industrial action short of a strike.
The RMT has made every effort to secure a series of very basic assurances from FGW over jobs, services and safety as a result of the introduction of the new Hitachi fleet and they have simply ignored us.
The union’s executive committee has now had opportunity to consider the fantastic vote that our members returned in favour of taking strike action and taken the decision to call on all our First Great Western members to take industrial action as listed below:
All affected are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-
• 18:30 hours on Wednesday 8th July 2015 and 18:29 hours on Friday 10th July 2015.
In addition, members are instructed not to work any overtime, between:
• 18.30 hours on Friday 10th July 2015 to 23:59 hours on Saturday 11th July 2015.
To clarify, for example if you have started your shift before 18:30 on Wednesday 8th July, then you should complete that shift. If your next shift is due to commence after 18:30 on Wednesday 8th July, then you should not work this shift, as you will be on strike. Additionally, you will not book on for any shifts that commence prior to 18:30 on Friday 10th July.
You do not have to tell your manager that you are taking industrial action. The union has already informed First Great Western of the grade and workplaces of who we are calling to take action. However there is nothing to stop you telling them if you wish to do so.
The solidarity and determination of members in the dispute has been incredible and I urge you to keep this up and stand shoulder to shoulder with your colleagues on the days of action.
