ANTI UNION CHRIS GRAYLING BACKS ASLEF DOO DEAL

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO / INTRODUCTION OF NEW DOO ROUTES – SOUTHERN (GTR)

I thought it important to update you on the latest developments

I am aware that Chris Grayling the Transport Secretary has written to MPs to support the deal that ASLEF has reached with GTR management.

The fact that a Tory secretary of state who has made a career out of attacking workers’ rights and unions,  and whose chief henchman Peter Wilkinson promised a punch-up to break ASLEF and RMT is yet another reason why drivers need to reject the deal.

The letter attacks the RMT for taking industrial action to defend the role of the guard and clearly indicates that he has taken sides in this dispute. The RMT has long beleived that he has been blocking attempts to reach an amicable resolution and by doing so has needlessly prolonged this dispute.  I have written to Chris Grayling responding to his outrageous claims pointing out that we have achieved deals in Wales and Scotland to keep guards on the trains.  In addition I have pointed out that we have done deals with three English TOCs but not one since he became Secretary of State for Transport.  It begs the question where the problem lies?

I have written to Chris Grayling offering to meet him so we can seek to address face to face the false claims he is making and the concerns he raises.

Chris Grayling should be encouraging Southern to get around the table and reach an agreement with this union on the retention of a guard, something the public want, instead of encouraging them to do a sweetheart deal with another union.

I have also written to ASLEF today reminding them of the Trade Union principles of not undermining another unions member’s terms and conditions nor undermining any industrial action being taken.

I hope the ASLEF members individually reject this latest tainted deal which is being backed by the very people who want to break ASLEF and RMT.

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash
General Secretary
