AUTOMATIC TRAIN OPERATION TRAINING, SMA3, DISTRICT LINE - LONDON UNDERGROUND

Our Ref LUL/11/2

2nd March 2021

TO ALL LONDON UNDERGROUND DISTRICT LINE TRAIN OPERATORS AND OPERATOR INSTRUCTORS

RMT CALLS INDUSTRIAL ACTION SHORT OF A STRIKE

Dear Colleagues,

AUTOMATIC TRAIN OPERATION TRAINING, SMA3, DISTRICT LINE - LONDON UNDERGROUND

Members are congratulated for the overwhelming vote in favour of action over the issue of London Underground’s planned implementation of automatic running through the SMA3 area without staff having received in-cab training. For members to take trains through the new section (SMA3) of automatic running without the possibility of either a pilot or Instructor Operator in the cab is a fundamentally unsafe practise and would put members at risk.

Subsequent to the ballot result where members gave a resounding ‘YES’ vote to taking action short of a strike the company have written to reiterate their unchanged position. Your NEC has considered the correspondence and noted that it adds nothing to address the concerns raised by members. The NEC has taken the decision that the action should proceed given the company’s unchanged position on the matter.

As a result of LUL’s failure to adequately address this issue, your NEC has decided to call Train Operator and Instructor Operator members with effect from 00:01 on Saturday 6th March 2021 until further notice to take continuous industrial action short of a strike as follows: -

To refuse to drive any train in automatic running through the SMA3 area without having received in-cab training in line with previous practice

Please note this instruction and show your solidarity by acting in accordance with it. I urge you and your colleagues to stand united and protect both your own and the travelling public’s health and safety by fully supporting the industrial action called by your union.

SUPPORT THE ACTION
UNITY IS STRENGTH

Yours sincerely
