BALLOT OPENS TODAY

Our Ref BR1/14/2

1st October 2021

Dear Colleagues

BALLOT OPENS TODAY

COP26 CONFERENCE (GLASGOW) EDINBURGH WAVERLEY, GLASGOW CENTRAL STATIONS – MITIE (NETWORK RAIL MANAGED STATIONS CONTRACT)

Further to my previous letter I write to advise you that the ballot for strike action opens today so members should start to receive voting papers next week.  Mitie’s refusal to offer enhanced pay during the COP26 climate conference is simply unacceptable to your union and does nothing to acknowledge the inevitable impact this international conference will have on station cleaners at Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central.

I can also advise you that RMT has this week reached an agreement with Network Rail where your station staff colleagues will receive an hourly premium and meal allowance. This will be paid if their workload is increased, their working pattern altered, or additional team numbers added. There is no doubt you should be similarly recognised and deserve far better than the shoddy treatment you are receiving from Mitie.

The ballot for strike action is due to close on Thursday 14th October 2021 and I urge you and your colleagues to send Mitie a clear message that their meanness will not be tolerated!

PLEASE READ - IMPORTANT NOTE ON BALLOT THRESHOLDS

Since the Trade Union Act 2016, where the government made the anti-trade union laws even more restrictive, all ballots have to reach two important thresholds. If we do not meet these thresholds no industrial action can take place.

  • At least 50% of all eligible members must vote
  • At least 40% of all those eligible to vote must vote Yes.

As a result of these draconian restrictions every single vote counts. A simple majority is not enough so you cannot rely on other colleagues to get the vote over the line. Therefore, I urge you to complete and return your voting paper as soon as you receive it and keep maximum pressure on Mitie to properly reward you during COP26.

If you or any of your colleagues has not received your voting paper by Friday 8th October 2021 please contact us urgently on info@rmt.org.uk or via the national helpline on 0800 376 3706 and a replacement will be sent out 1st Class.

I will keep members fully informed of developments.

Yours sincerely
