BREACH OF RECOGNITION AGREEMENT - P&O FERRIES

Our Ref: SH/20/6
14th April 2021

Dear Colleagues

BREACH OF RECOGNITION AGREEMENT - P&O FERRIES

I have received the following resolution from our Dover Shipping Branch:-

“Dover Shipping Branch notes the correspondence from a Juli Oliver-Smith, Head of People Services at P&O Ferries, that they are no longer adhering to the recognition agreement and are attempting to dictate to RMT who we can have representing our members at meetings. The recognition agreement itself was specifically worded when written to ensure that the Branch Secretary would be part of the negotiating team and this has been the case since 1999.

We therefore call on this National Executive Committee to inform the company that a dispute situation now exists between our two organisations and to prepare a ballot matrix of all RMT members at P&O Short Sea. This Branch will not sit by and watch the agreement which has been in place for over 20 years be eroded by HR management trying to make a name for themselves.”

Having considered this matter, the union’s National Executive Committee has instructed me to write to P&O Ferries advising them that a dispute situation now exists between our organisations in respect of this matter. This instruction has now been carried out.

I would be grateful if members could ensure that the RMT has the correct contact details (i.e. email, postal address, mobile number) and employment details (i.e. workplace and grade) for you by logging onto the members area of the website or alternatively you can e-mail us at info@rmt.org.uk or call the Freephone helpline on 0800 376 3706. Furthermore, this is a very difficult time for all transport workers, so if you are aware of any non-union members within your workplace, please feel free to encourage them to join the RMT so they can receive union protection going forward.

I will of course write to you again when any further developments arise in this matter.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
