To all Grand Central RMT members

Our Ref: BR2/15/1

11th September 2020

Dear Colleague

I write with regards to the above matter and to inform you that I have received a report from your Lead Officer indicating that Grand Central intends to close the North West Project of running trains from Blackpool to London. As a result of the company’s recent announcement our affected members are now facing the prospect of a redundancy situation.

Therefore, I have written to Grand Central advising that the RMT do not accept compulsory redundancies and will do everything we can to defend our members jobs, terms and conditions. I have also advised Grand Central that the RMT will not tolerate management putting unnecessary pressure on our members into opting for voluntary redundancy.

Your Lead Officer reports that consultation meetings will commence next week where it will be the RMT’s intentions to discuss ways of finding alternative employment within other Train Operating companies. This situation has already proven to be a very stressful time for our Grand Central members and the threat of job losses will only add to these uncertainties.

The matter has been considered by your union’s National Executive Committee who notes the consultation period commences next week and that the Union are looking into trying to find alternate employment amongst other TOCs in the North West. Following conclusion of the consultation meetings, the Lead Officer will provide an update report on the situation for further consideration by the Executive Committee.

I trust this keeps you fully advised on the matter and I will, of course, update you on any further developments.

Best wishes.

Mick Cash
General Secretary
