CONTROL RESTRUCTURING – NEXUS TYNE & WEAR METRO

Our Ref: BR2/15/4

23rd November 2020

Dear Colleague

CONTROL RESTRUCTURING – NEXUS (TYNE & WEAR METRO)

I write with regards to the above matter and to inform you that it has been brought to my attention by the Lead Officer that Nexus (Tyne & Wear Metro) has failed to offer our Control Room members a say over a proposed revised set of Terms and Conditions affecting their current working arrangements and salary.

The matter has been subject to recent consideration by the union’s National Executive Committee who notes that Nexus are in the final stages of negotiating a ‘revised’ set of Terms and Conditions with Unison for Control Centre staff. Although Nexus has sole Bargaining Agreement with Unison for this grade, the RMT holds a majority of members.

Despite the Lead Officer requesting that RMT members be given a vote on ‘acceptance’ or ‘rejection’ of these re-negotiated Terms Nexus has declined stating that they will only allow a ballot of Unison members.

The RMT believes that Nexus current position is completely unacceptable to our members and as such the Lead Officer has already taken steps to ensure that despite the sole claim to Bargaining rights for these grades being held between Nexus and Unison, any industrial action that the RMT may take in defense of our members interests are compliant with current legislation.

Therefore, I have informed Nexus (T&WM) that as a result of their intransigence, a dispute situation now exists between our two organisations and I am currently carrying out the necessary ballot matrix checks.

I would ask that you and your colleagues notify the Union of any changes to your membership records and ensure your details are up-to-date by contacting the RMT Head Office on 0207 387 4771 and ask for the Membership department. Alternatively, members can contact the RMT Helpline on 0800 376 3706 or by emailing the Helpline at info@rmt.org.uk and notify them of any updates.

I trust this keeps you fully advised on the matter and I will, of course, update you on any further developments.

Best wishes.

Mick Cash
General Secretary
