CREWING LEVELS, STENA ESTRID, HOLYHEAD TO DUBLIN ROUTE – STENA LINE
Further to my letter dated 9th January 2020, in which I advised you that despite the best efforts of the union’s negotiating team, Stena Line confirmed that they will adopt the crewing numbers they initially proposed (i.e. 23 permanent core crew and 8 permanent part time) on their new vessel. The RMT believing that this crewing model was inadequate entered into dispute with Stena Line and the National Executive Committee instructed me to ballot members for industrial action.
Although the company had refused to consider increasing the crewing levels on the Stena Estrid, after listening to representations from your union, management acknowledged that going forward the current crewing model could be insufficient. Therefore, Stena Line has informed us that the 23 permanent core crew and 8 permanent part time crewing strategy will be subject to a trial period ending on 31st May 2020. After trial period the company and this union will revisit this matter.
Noting this development, the National Executive Committee instructed me to suspend the ballot to allow the trial to take place. The union remains in dispute with Stena Line over this matter and will remain vigilant on this issue. In the coming weeks, the Assistant National Secretary will be convening meetings with your representatives in Holyhead and Birkenhead to discuss this matter going forward.
I will of course keep you advised of any developments in this matter when further information becomes available.
