Dear RMT Member
DFDS Matters
See the message below from RMT National Secretary Darren Procter:
“I am writing to inform you that your union will be looking to organise workplace visits and establish effective representative structures on each vessel that will ensure that the workplace concerns of you and your colleagues are discussed and addressed in a prompt manner.
While efforts have been made over the past few years to identify potential Representatives, this has been unsuccessful to date and with our ongoing political activity to establish minimum standards within the UK ferry sector through a mandatory seafarers’ charter that focuses on permanent employment, safe roster patterns, decent pay and pension provisions it is imperative that we are better organised and increase activity levels at DFDS.
It is not acceptable to us as a union not to have workplace Representatives in place, who are fully aware of the finer detail of your concerns to attend negotiations with your employer and represent the views of your RMT colleagues. It is essential that we develop our membership, identify individuals capable of representing the interests of DFDS members and provide the Local, Regional and National Support networks required to effectively represent your interests. All shipboard Representatives will be given the required training necessary to carry out your role effectively.
If you are interested in becoming a shipboard Representative or know of a colleague who may be interested, then please contact Dover Shipping Branch Secretary Carl Holman at dovershipping@rmt.org.uk for further details.
We have also identified that a number of members need to update contact details to receive up-to date employer specific information, sector updates or participate in electronic pay referendums and this can be done online by visiting www.rmt.org.uk/about/update-your-details/ emailing membership@rmt.org.uk or calling 08003763706.
Lastly, I would like to encourage all members to assist in recruiting any individuals who are not currently a member of RMT within your workplace, it is the responsibility of all members to progress our collective strength and ensure that we have effective representative structures in place at every workplace.
Best Regards
Darren Procter
RMT National Secretary”
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
