DISCIPLINARY, R. HAMMOND, GUARD, GUILDFORD – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

Our Ref: BR2/4/4
25th October 2017
TO ALL GUARDS AND COMMERCIAL GUARDS AT GUILFORD

Dear Colleague,

DISCIPLINARY, R. HAMMOND, GUARD, GUILDFORD – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

Further to previous correspondence, the preparation for the ballot of Guards and Commercial Guards at Guilford has been completed and ballot papers will be sent out to your home addresses from Tuesday 31st October 2017.

Since my last letter to you, Richard has unfortunately now been dismissed by South Western Railway for the alleged ‘Roll Forward’ incident. One of the charges against him claimed he had failed to use the power break control to bring the train to an immediate stop. We have been informed that SWR do not instruct or train guards on the procedure for handling a ‘Roll Forward’ so we would argue the decision to dismiss is disproportionate and totally unfair.

I urge you all to vote strongly in favour of action in defence of your colleague who needs our full support following his unfair sacking by SWR. The company have in our view jumped the gun in dismissing Richard who has no doubt he did everything possible in the best interest of the safety of his passengers. We must send SWR a clear message we will not tolerate such draconian and unfair punishments against RMT members and have demanded his reinstatement forthwith to his substantive role.

As advised above, voting papers will be sent to your home addresses from Tuesday 31st  October and the ballot will close on Tuesday 14th November 2017. If you or any of your colleagues has not received their voting paper by Tuesday 7th November 2017 please contact the RMT Freephone Helpline number on 0800 376 3706 or email info@rmt.org.uk and a replacement paper will be sent out first class the same day.

VOTE YES FOR ACTION
SUPPORT RICHARD HAMMOND

Yours sincerely
