DISCOUNTED LEISURE TRAVEL WITH GWR – WALES & WESTERN ROUTE – NETWORK RAIL
I am writing in relation to the above matter and further to my previous letter dated 6th November 2019 where I detailed the provision of the Discounted Leisure Travel facility for Network Rail employees who ultimately report to the Managing Director for Wales & Western.
The existing Discounted Leisure Travel does not go nearly far enough to satisfy this union’s aspirations on staff travel. British Rail terms and conditions allowed for Privilege Tickets for all railway staff and their friends and families, recognising and rewarding the efforts of workers by allowing significantly cheaper fares for leisure travel. This union would like to see creation of a scheme offering similar benefits made available to all of those who work on our railways to keep them running safely and efficiently. There is a Joint Working Group between this union and Network Rail where we will be putting forward our arguments for a similarly equitable travel facility to be put in place.
The current Discounted Leisure Travel facility with GWR is unavailable to Network Rail staff who work within other functions in the company and ultimately report to other Directors. All Network Rail staff contribute to operating and maintaining the railway network that enables GWR to operate. Extending the existing Discounted Leisure Travel other Network Rail staff would demonstrate GWR’s recognition of this work and acknowledge their industry colleagues’ contribution. The National Executive Committee believes that the current Discounted Leisure Travel facility should be extended to all those Network Rail staff who work or live on the GWR routes.
Accordingly I have written to all those Directors of Network Rail whose staff do not have access to the current Discounted Leisure Travel facility asking for them to apply to GWR for the facility to be extended to their staff. I have also written to GWR requesting that the Discounted Leisure Travel facility is extended to the Network Rail staff that work and live on their route but don’t happen to report into the Managing Director for Wales & Western.
I trust this keeps you fully advised on the matter and I will, of course, keep you informed on any further developments.
