Dismissal, B. Frederick, Train Manager – Great Western Railway
I am writing in relation to the above matter. As you will be aware, the ballot for industrial action and to defend our colleague opened on Tuesday. Our Colleague Ben was subject to an appalling barrage of abuse by a disruptive passenger whilst carrying out his normal duties and was ultimately dismissed for defending himself.
Ben’s appeal hearing has now taken place, where an outcome was reached that was both acceptable to our member and this union. The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and has noted the great courage and resolve shown by our Brother Ben Frederick in this difficult time. The union maintains its position that our Brother did nothing wrong and the situation should never have reached this point.
The NEC would like to thank all members up and down the country and throughout the union for their magnificent support and solidarity during this dispute. The message of support from branches and members has demonstrated the best principles of our movement and that an injury to one is an injury to all. The union will continue to fight for the rights of our frontline staff who face assaults and abuse.
Therefore, the ballot for industrial action is now cancelled and I have advised the company that we are no longer in dispute. I trust this keeps you fully advised and once again would like to thank you all for your solidarity and support.
