EMAIL:
To All Gate Gourmet RMT Members at Edinburgh Waverley
Our Ref: HC/4/1
16th August 2024
Dear Colleague
DISMISSAL, J HUGHES – GATE GOURMET (EDINBURGH)
Further to my previous correspondence, where I informed you that the RMT had gone into dispute with Gate Gourmet over the dismissal of RMT member and long-standing representative, John Hughes. I can now advise you that I have received an update report from the Lead Officer indicating that a date for the Appeal Hearing of Brother Hughes has still not been confirmed by the company.
Therefore, the matter has again been considered by the union’s National Executive Committee who has instructed me to commence a ballot for industrial action of all our Gate Gourmet members located at Edinburgh Waverley for Strike Action and Industrial Action Short of a Strike, to take the form of No Rest Day Working and an Overtime Ban. The ballot for industrial action will open on Friday 23rd August 2024 and will close on Tuesday 3rd September 2024.
If you have not received a ballot paper by Wednesday 28th August 2024 please contact the RMT Freephone Helpline urgently on 0800 376 3706 or email info@rmt.org.uk where a replacement ballot paper will be sent out to your home address by first class post. Additionally, if you are aware of a colleague who has not received their ballot paper, please ask them to call the Helpline number above to update their details and to receive a replacement ballot paper.
John has been dismissed for an alleged incident of threatening behaviour and intimidation at the workplace. Despite John apologising profusely and showing great remorse over the incident, management has taken the harsh decision to sack him.
It is imperative that we get a massive return in the ballot for industrial action, so we are not prevented from acting on our members' wishes by the ballot thresholds. Failure to meet these thresholds means industrial action cannot happen, so a high turnout is crucial.
