To All Rail Gourmet (GWR Contract) RMT Members at Paddington Depot

Our Ref: HC/4/1

19th March 2021

Dear Colleague

Further to my letter dated the 24th February 2021 with regards to the above matter and where I informed you that I was seeking assurances from Rail Gourmet for the immediate reinstatement of fellow colleague, Sameer Patel. Regrettably, I now write to advise you that Brother Patel has been dismissed from his employment.

As you are aware, Sameer was initially suspended for raising concerns regarding health and safety standards. The company has since taken the harsh decision to sack him from his job. I have also been made aware that similar charges to those brought against Brother Patel, are being brought against two other Rail Gourmet members on another contract in Edinburgh.

The RMT is absolutely appalled by the outrageous actions of this unscrupulous company and believes this is a concerted move by Rail Gourmet to deter our members from raising Health and Safety issues.

As a result of the above, I have notified Rail Gourmet that we are in dispute and I will be balloting all our Rail Gourmet members located at Paddington Depot for industrial action. I am currently carrying out the necessary ballot matrix checks and once these are complete, I will proceed with the ballot for Strike Action and Action Short of a Strike.

In the meantime, I would ask that you ensure your membership details are up to date by contacting the RMT Helpline on 0800 376 3706 or by Email at info@rmt.org.uk. Additionally, if you know of a colleague who has recently moved or changed their employment please ask them to contact the Union on one of the above methods.

I trust this keeps you fully advised on the matter and I will, of course, update you on any further developments.

Best wishes.

Mick Cash
General Secretary
