Dear RMT member,
ELECTION OF DELEGATES TO
BIENNIAL MARITIME INDUSTRIAL ORGANISING CONFERENCE 2024
29th – 30th MAY 2024 – BELFAST
With reference to the above, I am writing to advise members in the Shipping, Docks, Ports & Waterways Grades of the details for this important conference and how you may be able to participate. The Conference is to be held in Belfast from Wednesday 29th to Thursday 30th May 2024 and the venue is to be confirmed.
The Role of the Biennial Maritime Industrial Organising Conference
The primary role of the Industrial Organising Conferences for their delegated sectors is to develop strategies for better Union organisation of workers in their sectors; develop strategies for learning, education and training of representatives and activists; develop networking and communication between representatives and activists; to report on these, and other relevant matter, to the RMT’s National Executive Committee as proposals in support of the union’s national organising strategy.
Branches are permitted to submit up to three resolutions to the Biennial Maritime Industrial Organising Conference which, in line with the primary role of this Conference, are required to be relevant to the problems currently faced within the industry and promote discussion and ideas to help enable, develop, and progress organisation activities and increase membership.
Branches have been informed that the deadline for receipt of resolutions at Head Office is Wednesday 8thMay 2024.
Nominations & Election of Delegates
Nominations have been invited from Maritime Grades Branches and General Grades Branches with five or more members in the Shipping, Docks, Ports & Waterways Grades to attend as delegates to the Biennial Maritime Industrial Organising Conference. When a Branch is seeking nominations, the Branch should seek to promote diversity in candidates where possible. Due to the short notice the closing date for nominations will be FRIDAY 10th MAY 2024.
Maritime Grades Branches are entitled to one delegate per 250 (or part thereof) members. General Grades Branches are grouped together in six electoral districts and each district is entitled to one delegate per 250 (or part thereof) of members within the applicable Maritime Grades.
Branches are required to complete and return the nomination forms to this office by no later than Friday 10thMay 2024. Upon receipt, Branches will receive an emailed acknowledgement.
If more than the required number of delegates are nominated in any General Grades district, an election will be necessary.
In addition to the Biennial Maritime IOC, you may be aware that the Union also has a Biennial Offshore & Energy IOC. Please note that delegates may only attend one conference and must register as either a Maritime (Shipping, Docks, Ports & Waterways) member or Offshore & Energy member to attend the applicable conference.
Mutual Respect Policy
In line with Council of Executives Decision No. CE683, September 2015, and National Executive Committee Decision No. 1255, June 2019, candidates must declare that they have read, understood, and will abide by RMT’s Mutual Respect Policy by signing a declaration on the nomination form.
Should you wish to attend as a delegate to the Biennial Maritime Industrial Organising Conference, please contact your Branch Secretary.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
