ELECTRONIC SIGNING ON, PLATFORM STAFF – GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY

Dear Colleague,

ELECTRONIC SIGNING ON, PLATFORM STAFF – GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY

As you may be aware, Great Western Railway was attempting to trial a swipe card signing in/out system at Plymouth and Oxford stations for all platform staff. This is despite their being no previous concerns or issues raised with the current system, which is still robust and effective.

Our Lead Officer provided an updated report, which included a summary of the Station Booking on/off proposals from the company. An urgent meeting was held with our GWR Stations Divisional Council, Lead Officer and Secretary to discuss the company’s proposals. Accordingly, as these proposals were unfair and unnecessary and in light of the current major changes taking place on GWR with the introduction of new IET trains, your union immediately invited the company to a meeting to discuss these proposals and to seek the removal of these proposals for the present time.

I can now advise that after consultation with the company I have received assurances that GWR will not progress these proposals any further at this stage and have withdrawn the electronic signing on for station grade members. The company have also stated that should these proposals be revisited, they will do so using the machinery of negotiation prior to any implementation.

I ask that members remain vigilant on these issues and I will keep you fully advised should anything arise on this issue.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
