Dear RMT Member

FUTURE OF DERBY LITCHURCH LANE DEPOT – ALSTOM

You will know of the very disturbing news which has emerged in recent weeks over the precarious future for the Litchurch Lane site, following which Alstom announced that it was cutting up to 500 permanent jobs and around 800 agency workers.

This news is obviously very concerning for all workers at the site, along with their families and communities.

The company informed us that it has been continuing to meet members of the DFT to try and bring future works forward to tender. Even if this was achieved, however, it remains doubtful if this could be done quick enough to turn this situation around.

Your union’s National Executive Committee considered this grim situation this week and it has instructed me request support from our Parliamentary Group of MPs and ask them to write to the DFT to demand an urgent meeting to try and keep this historic site in operation.

It is appalling that the company is using the situation as a cost-saving exercise, selling off assets and making redundancies at a time it should be reinvesting in a skilled engineering workforce and retaining industry expertise. The government must also take responsibility for the situation.

We are also insisting that there is complete overhaul of Train Manufacturing and Refurbishment within the UK, as it is very clear that the current method of operation is broken and needs urgent intervention from Government.

Your union is now taking the above steps and I will keep you updated on all developments.

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch

General Secretary
