To: All RMT Virgin West Coast Members and Members working on Virgin contracts.

Future of Virgin West Coast
As you will be aware the government have decided to ban Stagecoach from bidding for further rail franchises.
As Stagecoach is part of a joint venture with Virgin then this means that as things stand Virgin will not be able to continue as the operator on the West Coast Mainline.
I know that this will cause some anxiety amongst members as Virgin has been the operator for many years
I can advise you of the following steps I have taken to protect members.
• On the day of the announcement I sought an immediate meeting with the Secretary of State Chris Grayling to discuss his decision and the implications for our members and also to call for the franchise to be taken into public ownership.
• The RMT Parliamentary Group of MPs at Westminster is also seeking a meeting with Ministers to discuss the Government’s decision and demand that whatever happens your jobs, roles, pay, conditions and pensions are all protected.
• The RMT group of MPs will also be tabling a motion in parliament in support of Virgin Staff and be submitting written parliamentary questions.
• The union will also be seeking guarantees of protection for your jobs, roles, pay, conditions and pensions from any potential bidders for the West Coast franchise.
RMT members work hard to provide a service to passengers on the West Coast and deserve to be fully protected. I can assure you that your union will be doing everything it can to do just that and I will keep you advised of developments.
