IMPORTANT BREAKTHROUGH IN DRIVER ONLY OPERATION DISPUTES

Dear Colleague,

IMPORTANT BREAKTHROUGH IN DRIVER ONLY OPERATION DISPUTES

I am writing to update you on an important breakthrough in the long-running campaign over rail safety and access after members on Greater Anglia voted overwhelmingly to accept an offer which guarantees the Guard n their services and sees the extension of Driver Only Operation stopped.

The fight against Driver Only Operation has been on-going for a considerable period of time with some disputes now entering the third year. The RMT's position on Driver Only Operation has remained consistent throughout, that the Safety Critical Role of the Guard remains on the train. The union will never allow companies to put profit before passengers and we will not agree to anything less than a safe and secure railway for everyone.

Our colleagues on Greater Anglia have taken part in a long running and hard fought campaign to retain the Safety Critical Guard on the GA network. There is no doubt that their determination has forced the company into reaching an agreement with your union that guarantees a second safety critical guard. This agreement is also a great example for other companies to follow in being constructive and working with the union in talks rather than being destructive and working against us.

As you are aware, the fight against DOO was not exclusive to one Train Operating Company and the fight is still ongoing on a number of TOCs. I am sure you will all continue to support our Guard colleagues across the network. You may have seen that our South Western Railway Guards and Commercial Guards are due to take over eight days of industrial action in order to force SWR to Guarantee the Safety Critical Role of the Guard after talks broke down. I urge you all to support our colleagues by attending protests and supporting the pickets. Additionally, you can contribute to the National DOO Disputes fund and help alleviate any hardship our brother and sisters may be experiencing during the industrial action. If you wish to donate to our DOO Disputes fund you can do so by clicking this link:- www.rmt.org.uk, alternatively, you can ring our Freephone helpline, cheques can also be made out to the RMT National Disputes Fund.

I urge you and your colleagues to continue showing your tremendous support and solidarity in defence of the role of the Guard. We must continue to support any action and send these TOCs who are refusing to provide the guarantees we need a clear message that we will not standby and allow them to destroy the vital Safety Critical Role of the Guard.

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash
