Dear Colleague

RMT CALLS FURTHER INDUSTRIAL ACTION

INTRODUCTION OF NEW DOO ROUTES – SOUTHERN (GTR)

Further to my letter dated the 15th February 2017 I write with regards to the above matter and where I informed you that the deal reached between GTR and ASLEF had been rejected in a recent referendum of its membership. Following on from this we immediately wrote to the Southern HR Director requesting an urgent meeting to discuss the dispute situation and where we currently stand on its future direction. Thus, seeking clarification on what emerged from the discussions held between Southern and the TUC and the final outcome.

I have since received a response from the Southern HR Director indicating that the company’s ‘position has remained consistent throughout this dispute, they are happy to meet the RMT with a view to resolving the dispute but are not prepared to do so whilst the RMT continue to instigate industrial action.’ So too has the RMT and our Southern Driver members position remained consistent. We will not be intimidated by Southern management’s threats and we will continue to fight for a guard to be in operational control of the doors and a safe railway for all.

Therefore, the matter has again been subject to recent consideration by your union’s National Executive Committee who feel that the only way to get Southern to abandon their high risk plans to introduce and extend DOO without agreement and guarantee a safety critical person on every train is to take further industrial action.

Members are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between: -

•    0001 hours and 2359 hours on Monday 13th March 2017

Southern GTR has deliberately wrecked talks with the RMT and made a mockery of the negotiating process. The company has continued to completely ignore the safety issues at the heart of this dispute. Once again, I would like to thank you for your strength and determination throughout this dispute and I urge you to continue your support and stand shoulder to shoulder with your colleagues during the industrial action.

UNITY IS STRENGTH – SUPPORT THE ACTION

Best wishes.
