Dear colleague

You may be aware of the news announced this morning that Stagecoach has lost the East Midlands Trains franchise and been disqualified from bidding for any rail franchises. East Midlands Trains will now be run by Dutch company Abellio from August 2019.

While I do not envisage any issues arising for you and your colleagues over this transfer, your union will still ensure that all current terms and conditions, including pension provisions, are protected and that this transfer will have very limited impact on your working arrangements.

I would, however, reiterate your union’s demand that the announcement this morning is yet another example of how rail privatisation has been a history of chaos and an unremitting fiasco, with companies such as Stagecoach able to run a public service while having no other interest but raking in profits.

This is why your union has had a policy that railway franchises should be publicly owned and believes, as a first step, that all Stagecoach contracts should be brought in house by the government immediately. If Stagecoach are not considered to be fit to run the railway in future, then they should not be considered fit to run it now so we need to bring an end to their interest in the industry now.

I can assure you and your colleagues working for East Midlands Trains that your union will do all in its power to ensure your current terms and conditions, your jobs and pensions will all be protected when this franchise transfers to its new owners in August. I will be writing to both Stagecoach and Abellio to request talks on how this franchise will be transferred and ensure the process is all carried out with the least disruption to you and your colleagues.

I will of course keep you advised of all developments which arise in this matter.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
