Members Taking Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and Reporting Medication

To all Lead Officers and Company Council Representatives:

At last year’s AGM a resolution was passed on “Members Taking Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Reporting Medication ”.  The resolution requested the union negotiate confidential ways of reporting medication to employers.  The reasoning was so that members did not have to “out” themselves or share the details of their sexuality with their managers if they were taking PrEP which is a medication which stops the transmission of HIV.

The NEC decision on the motion was:

““We instruct the General Secretary to carry out in line with the resolution by placing on the agenda with companies.  Lead Officers to be briefed on the issue and this brief circulated.”

Following this, the policy which was proposed by Eurostar to ensure a confidential method of reporting medication was considered by the NEC.  The NEC decision was:

“That we instruct the General Secretary to confirm acceptance of this new process with the assurance that confidentiality is paramount.  In addition we instruct the General Secretary to circulate the procedure to Lead Officers and Company Council reps as good practice and to report this back to the LGBT+ Advisory Committee.

Therefore, in carrying out this resolution, the Eurostar process summary is here

NHS information on PrEP is here: https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/pre-exposure-prophylaxis-prep/about-pre-exposure-prophylaxis-prep/

Please do raise this issue with companies to ensure that they have a confidential method of reporting medication.

Should you have any progression with companies, please inform our Equal Opportunities Officer, Jess Webb.

Yours sincerely

Mick Lynch
