Dear RMT member
MTR ELIZABETH LINE: LONE WORKING ON GATELINES
I write as regards a resolution I received recently from RMT East London Rail branch in which they raised grave concerns about the increasing dangers faced by RMT members working alone on gatelines at MTR Elizabeth Line stations, which was putting them at unacceptable risk. You can read the full resolution and National Executive Committee (NEC) decisions regarding the resolution in this Head Office circular: https://bit.ly/3Yo40z0
Subsequent to the NEC decision I actioned the following points from the branch resolution by writing to MTR demanding that they implement the following:
1. MTR Elizabeth Line conduct an Immediate Review, initiating a comprehensive review of lone working practices at all stations, focusing on gateline staff. This review to involve the Health and Safety reps and Local industrial reps in the areas affected.
2. Engage Stakeholders: Collaborate with relevant authorities, including management and safety management, to assess the risks and explore safer working arrangements.
3. Propose Alternatives: Develop and propose alternative staffing models that ensure no worker is left alone on gatelines, such as paired or team-based shifts.
4. Implement Safety Measures: Advocate for and implement immediate safety measures to protect our members, including increased security presence and emergency response protocols.
I have also requested an update report from the branch and the Lead Officer on the situation - which the NEC will consider, when deciding if further action is required. I will keep you updated of any further developments.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch,
General Secretary
