MULTI-SKILLED OPERATIVE (MSO) RESTRUCTURE, COATBRIDGE TERMINAL – RUSSELL RAILROAD 

 

Following the news that Russell Railroad have won the Tesco Contract at Coatbridge Terminal, which will see 13 new services starting in September 2024, a requirement to open the terminal 24/7 has arisen. 

 

Existing terms and conditions of ex-Freightliner members are Monday to Friday, with overtime rates at weekends and a commitment to work 1 in 3 Saturdays. Given the significant increase in workload, the company has presented proposals for a 4on/4off working pattern.

Your negotiating team are recommending acceptance of the offer. A summary of the what the company are proposing can be found below. 

 

The offer applies to former Freightliner Ltd employees only.

 

  1. Former Freightliner Ltd employees will have the option of remaining on their existing terms and conditions and therefore Monday to Friday working with no changes.
  2. MSO’s taking up the 4on/4off shift pattern will move to the following
    1. 12-hour shift system, over 8 days, 4on 4off, equating to a 42-hour working week, with a rotating day/night shift pattern.
    2. A consolidated salary incorporating current night duty and weekend enhancements, at £40848pa, hourly rate £18.70ph.
    3. Consolidated salary will be fully pensionable.
    4. Company Sick Pay to be based on 35 hours as per all other grades at the terminal, currently paid on salary of £27432pa, new rate to be 35/42 of £40,848 equating to CSP based on £34040.
    5. Monday to Friday Overtime to be 1.25x £23.38ph
    6. Weekend Overtime to be 1.75x of the unrestructured rate of pay, currently £15.07ph, equating to an overtime rate of £25.62ph.
    7. Bank and Public Holiday entitlements reman as per MSO 2005 agreement (copy attached for your reference)
    8. Holiday entitlement to be pro-rata based on 4on,4off current 21 days would be 14.5 days, plus 8 bank holidays, equating to 22.5 days, plus any long service entitlements.
    9. Rail Shunting Duties are not included in the duties, those that are trained and required to carry out these duties will receive an enhancement rate of £19.70ph., the numbers of MSO’s required for shunting to be agreed locally.
    10. The salary would not be reviewed until 1st April 2025
    11. No changes to any other terms and conditions of service.

 

The Union’s National Executive Committee has considered this matter and has noted the report from your Lead Officer and the recommendation of your negotiating team. Therefore, I have been instructed to conduct an e-referendum. The Union’s National Executive Committee is recommending members vote ‘YES’ to accept the offer.

 

The online referendum will close at 11am on Tuesday 13th August 2024.
