Pay and Grading Structure – Stena

Our Ref: SH/15/4
6th December 2017

Dear Colleagues

Pay and Grading Structure – Stena

I write further to my previous correspondence in which I advised you of the recent situation and updated members on the discussions that have taken place with the company. This matter was listed for discussion at a national meeting between the union’s negotiating team and Stena which was scheduled for Friday 27th October 2017. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances this meeting was aborted. The meeting has been reconvened for Thursday 7th December 2017, where this matter has been listed as an agenda item.

Additionally, I have been advised that that there have been examples of Grade 3 OBS members being advised by managers that they cannot claim higher grade duty when they are undertaking Grade 2 roles on the Liverpool/Belfast route. It was brought to my attention that no guidance or procedure was issued to on-board management on this route to facilitate the accurate payment to members.

The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and considers the current situation to be unacceptable. The National Executive Committee are also concerned that scheduled shipboard, local, route and national level meetings between the RMT and management are not happening. Furthermore, the National Executive Committee are concerned that minutes at meetings from our meetings with Stena are not being produced. Accordingly, should the company fail to agree dates for local and route level meetings by 31st December 2017; then the National Executive Committee will consider this as a breakdown in industrial relations. The National Executive Committee has instructed that an organising campaign is held at Stena and further information regarding training courses and mapping exercises will be circularised in due course.

I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will inform you of the outcome of the meeting and any further developments that arise on this issue.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
