Payment of Wages and Sick Pay Arrangements, Coronavirus – Stena Line
I am sure that you will have seen today’s internal communications from Stena Line advising that they are suspending company Sick Pay with immediate effect and until further notice. With no attempt to discuss this your trade union, Stena Line has launched an outrageous attack on seafarers' right to a decent sick pay scheme which will mean that you and your colleagues in the UK will only be entitled to the statutory minimum of £94.25 per week, if you are diagnosed with the coronavirus.
In January Stena Line agreed to honour the CBA with the RMT on the new Estrid ro-ro ferry. Barely a week into this crisis and Stena Line is taking an aggressive approach to their own staff, shedding 950 jobs in Sweden and other European countries and attacking the CBA with RMT for UK Ratings. Stena Line's own trade association, the Chamber of Shipping is calling for direct financial support from the government to pay salaries and meet additional costs incurred by the coronavirus which would include sick pay.
It is our opinion that Stena Line should be taking this opportunity to train up their existing and future crews and honour the terms of the CBA for any seafarers who are required to self-isolate.
Your union is seeking an urgent meeting with Stena to discuss the implications of this decision. I will keep you advised of all developments following the conclusion of this meeting.
