TO ALL ABM CLEANING MEMBERS ON LONDON UNDERGROUND CONTRACTS

Dear Colleagues

PROVISION OF FREE TRAVEL FOR CLEANERS DURING COVID-19 – LONDON UNDERGROUND

RMT has held discussions with TfL to request that all cleaners on LUL are given the basic right of free travel to work on their services during the current Coronavirus crisis. Disgracefully TfL has rejected our request saying they cannot afford it. This decision is both appalling and wrong.

Cleaners such as yourself play a vital role on the front line in the national efforts to keep people safe and protected from this deadly virus. You put yourselves in harms way on a daily basis, working round the clock, and should be recognised as the essential workers you are and be given this basic right. Even in normal times we have always believed you should get free travel to work and have raised this every year in our pay claims.

The union’s National Executive Committee has considered TfL’s response and has made clear our outrage that they have tried to defend their decision saying tough choices were being made. We believe the choice to deny you free travel, a measure that would represent an insignificant drop in fare income for TfL but would be a massive help to members, is staggering in its meanness and complete lack of regard for you and your colleagues. Those responsible should hand their heads in shame and we will be taking this matter up with the Mayor of London to demand he intervenes immediately. We have also highlighted our disgust at TfL’s decision in the media.

Please be assured we will continue to press for this decision to be reversed and I will keep you fully informed of developments.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
