RATES OF PAY & CONDITIONS OF SERVICE 2017 – STENA LINE SEAFARERS

Our Ref: BR2/0001/STENA(S)

3rd February 2017

Dear Colleagues

RATES OF PAY & CONDITIONS OF SERVICE 2017 – STENA LINE SEAFARERS

Further to my previous letter on the above matter dated 16th January 2017, your Representatives have now advised me that the overwhelming feedback from the shipboard consultation is that the latest pay offer from the company does not meet with your aspirations. You will have also received an extensive letter from management promoting their revised proposals and claiming that they provided both ‘an inflationary correction and an increase of earnings’. It is our firm belief that the company’s latest offer falls well under the current rate of inflation (the last published RPI figure is 2.5%) and that this pay award would represent a pay cut in real terms.

Accordingly, I have written to the company advising them of this union’s rejection of their latest offer. I have also advised Northern Marine Manning Services that should further pay negotiations with a view to improving their offer not be forthcoming, then then a dispute situation will exist between our respective organisations. Additionally, I have advised NMMS there is a long standing commitment from the company that the starting rate for future recruitment should be the UK Living Wage. Their proposed pay award fails to honour their previous assurances surrounding the Living Wage and if the company refuses to stand by this commitment, then a dispute situation will be called by your union.

I am also preparing an industrial action ballot, should the RMT need to proceed with a dispute. In order to assist the union with this task, if you have recently changed jobs or work location, then I would be most grateful if you could contact the RMT Helpline on 0800 376 3706 to ensure that your membership details are up-to-date. I am currently arranging a meeting with your Representatives and I will, of course, keep you fully advised of any further developments.

Yours sincerely
