RMT CALLS STRIKE ACTION
RATES OF PAY AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE 2017
VIRGIN WEST COAST TRAINS
Firstly I want to thank and congratulate you all for the magnificent ballot result. It honestly was one of the strongest turnouts and votes in favour of action we have ever seen and has given your negotiating team the best possible mandate in negotiations. You should all be very proud of the strength and determination you have shown to challenge Virgin’s West Coast’s appalling treatment of their staff. The huge result cannot leave them in any doubt that you are prepared to take action to get a fair and just pay settlement.
Talks have been held with the company where they did broadly propose a revised offer although this has never been formalised or provided in detail. We do not consider their offer acceptable as it falls far short of the offer they made to drivers and does not make up for one hour reduction of the working week. Our own proposals, which would have fairly addressed all these issues were rejected out of hand. No doubt you will have seen their efforts to spin the current impasse on Yammer but the simple fact is their offer simply isn’t good enough.
As a result of this breakdown in talks and their failure to table a fair and equitable offer, your National Executive Committee has decided that we have no option but to call a sustained period of industrial action to force management back to the table.
Therefore all Virgin West Coast Members are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between: -
• 0001 and 2359 Friday 15th December 2017
• 0001 and 2359 Friday 22nd December 2017
• 0001 and 2359 Friday 5th January 2018
• 0001 and 2359 Monday 8th January 2018
• 0001 and 2359 Friday 26th January 2018
• 0001 and 2359 Monday 29th January 2018
I urge you all to carry on your magnificent support for your union and stand shoulder to shoulder with your colleagues on the strike days. This will give your negotiating team the best possible change to force the company to table an offer that meets our aspirations. We will of course continue to seek talks to resolve this dispute but Virgin West Coast’s current abject failure to table a fair offer on pay cannot go unchallenged. Therefore I urge you to strongly support the action.
Members will be kept fully informed of development.
