Rates of Pay & Conditions of Service 2017 – Virgin Trains East Coast

Our Ref: BR2/0001/VTEC

24th November 2017

Dear Colleague,

Rates of Pay & Conditions of Service 2017 – Virgin Trains East Coast

As you are aware, further talks have taken place with the Company and it has provided us with the clarification that we have requested which is as follows:-

In relation to joint commitment to technology, it was confirmed that this refers to technology already in use for every day roles; specifically I-phones and I-pads.

Attendance Management

From discussions today the Company believes that the current attendance management arrangements require review and a commitment to establish a working party to review this policy with a view to identify changes which will support staff and facilitate a reduction in staff absence, as per original agreement.

Rolling Sick Pay

Regarding the introduction of the rolling sick pay year, RMT has genuine concerns about those members who are suffering with serious illness or find themselves absent as a result of work related accidents and it has been made clear that we need assurances that any changes will not have the effect of worsening their financial situation.

Virgin East Coast has said that it is not in a position to withdraw the rolling sick pay as a principle, as one of the conditions of the pay award. However, within the attendance management review, it is prepared to consider alternative approaches which may negate the future change to the sick pay year. The Company is requesting a commitment from RMT for this review with view to introducing changes by 1st April 2018.

Percentage Pay Increase

The pay award, specifically the percentage in year one (3.2%) and the RPI award in year two is unchanged as a result of the latest discussions.

Your National Executive Committee (NEC) has instructed me to circulate this clarified proposal to you and I would be grateful if you could make your views known to your Company Council representatives who will be attending a meeting on Tuesday 28th November at 13:00 at RMT Head Office.

Yours sincerely
Mick Cash
General Secretary
