Dear Colleagues

In line with union policy, a pay submission for an increase in pay and improved terms and conditions has been submitted. The Regional Organiser has met with the company and the following offer has been tabled:

  • In lieu of a general pay increase, Nexus will pay a non-consolidated one-off ex gratia payment of £500 gross to each employee who was in the employment of Nexus on 1st April 2021 and remains in employment on the date this agreement. This will be pro-rata for part time employees and subject to usual payroll deductions, such as tax, national insurance, and pension.

In addition to the payment, Nexus is proposing the following:

  • Nexus will improve maternity pay provision by increasing Occupational Maternity Pay to 13 weeks full pay and 13 weeks half pay (from 6 weeks full pay and 12 weeks half pay). This change will be effective from the formal commencement of this agreement for any person starting maternity leave beyond that date.
  • Nexus will increase paternity leave from 2 weeks at full pay to 3 weeks at full pay. This change will be effective from the formal commencement of this agreement for any person starting paternity leave beyond this day.
  • Nexus remains committed to exploring improved travel facilities with train operating companies and has been able to secure reciprocal travel arrangements with Grand Central, Transpennine Express and LUMO. The conditions applicable to these arrangements will be clearly published on the intranet in due course. The intention is for these arrangements to be effective from a date to be confirmed until 31st March 2023. Note that these reciprocal agreements are not contractual and are subject to regular reviews by both parties and as such can be amended or withdrawn at any point in time.
  • Nexus will extend the current retired employee and partner travel card from off peak only to cover all services (peak and off peak) on the Metro and Ferry. This will be effective from 1st November 2021.

The next date for a review of terms and conditions of employment including pay will be 1st April 2022.

After careful consideration, your National Executive Committee has instructed me to hold an e-referendum of you and your colleagues so you can have your say on this offer. Although, the National Executive Committee welcomes the improvements to maternity and paternity pay and reciprocal travel arrangements for staff; your National Executive Committee cannot endorse this offer, as the non-consolidated payment represents a continuation of the public sector pay freeze. The National Executive Committee wishes to advise all Nexus members, that should you vote to reject the offer, then the union will ballot members for industrial action.

The online referendum will close on Thursday 21st October 2021 at 10:30 hours

Members will shortly receive an email from ‘RMT Referenda’ which will allow you to register your vote. Please follow the instructions and make sure you complete this by no later than 10:30 hours on Thursday 21st October 2021. Once members have voted, you will receive an email from RMT Referenda confirming how you have voted and that your vote has been cast successfully. Members must have an email address to take part in the e-referendum.
