RMT REJECTS DERISORY PAY OFFER FROM MANAGEMENT
STRIKE ACTION ON MONDAY 18TH OCTOBER REMAINS ON

Our Ref: B/0001/SSW(EBT)
13th October 2021

Dear Colleagues

RATES OF PAY AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE 2020/2021 – STAGECOACH SOUTH WEST (EXETER, BARNSTAPLE AND TORBAY)

Further to previous correspondence, I can report that your union has received a revised pay offer from Stagecoach South West. The revised offer is loaded with savage cuts to conditions and benefits that would drive even more key staff out of the industry at a time when it's already haemorrhaging Bus Drivers. The offer is a basic uplift for Bus Drivers from £10.76 per hour to £11.80 per hour from 10th October 2021, there is no back pay element to this offer.

However, management’s offer includes serious reductions to your terms and conditions to self-finance the deal including a drastic reduction in sick pay down to just 60% of basic pay. Additionally, there was no new deal for key Engineering, Cleaning, Supervisory and Clerical staff just an existing offer of 2.2%, a one-off payment of £300 and the same reductions to their terms and conditions.

Also included as part of this offer is cut in the working week to 39 hours (which would mean the loss of two hours pay); changes to the overnight Driver weekly supplement (which would mean a loss pay of around £40 per week) and the current meal break arrangements change from a 45 minute a day average paid meal break to a 1 hour 20 -minute unpaid meal break.

Furthermore, the company are proposing to introduce revised contracts for new employees on inferior terms and conditions, which goes against our collective bargaining agreement and is certain to push new recruits away from the bus industry.

Even with this string-loaded offer Bus Drivers would only be earning little more than £23,000 a year and other Grades will be earning even less. That's why key staff are leaving in droves, threatening lifeline transport services to thousands ‎across Devon who rely on our buses.

You and your colleagues are key workers and have worked throughout the pandemic; instead of rewarding staff for their courage, commitment and resilience Stagecoach are attempting to ram through cuts to terms and conditions and keep members in poverty pay.

After consulting with your Representatives, the union’s National Executive Committee has instructed me to reject the revised offer. This means that the scheduled strike action will go ahead on Monday. For ease of reference, you are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:

  • 00:01 hours and 23:59 on Monday 18th October 2021

I urge you all to continue with the magnificent support that you have shown for your union so far by backing the upcoming strike action. We will win this fight because we are right!

STAND FIRM TOGETHER AND SUPPORT THE STRIKE ACTION

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch
General Secretary
