Dear Colleagues
Rates of Pay and Conditions of Service 2023 – Royal Fleet Auxiliary
Referring to previous correspondence, I can report that the RMT and our sister trade union, Nautilus UK, have received a letter from the Ministry of Defence regarding our pay disputes at the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The MoD has requested that the RMT and Nautilus UK suspend their scheduled industrial action this week, to allow for talks to take place next week. The letter from the MoD was vague and contained no proposals.
Having discussed this matter with your RFA Representatives, the union’s National Executive Committee are of the opinion that the contents of the letter do not resolve this dispute. The National Executive Committee has therefore decided that the strike action scheduled for 16thAugust 2024 will go ahead. For ease of reference the strike action is as follows:
- If your ship is in port DO NOT TURN TO for any duty that commences between 00:01 hours and 23:59 hours on Friday 16th August 2024.
NB: During the above period of strike action members must ensure that the safety of the ship is maintained, including Moorings and Gangways, at all times. |

I can also report that following receipt of this letter, Nautilus UK members at the RFA will be taking strike action on Thursday 15th August 2024.
On Friday 16th August, there will be picket lines at the following locations:
- Portland Port from 7.30am onwards
- Plymouth (Devonport Albert Gate) from 8am onwards
- Birkenhead (Camell Lairds) from 8am onwards
I would encourage all members participating in the industrial action to attend one of these picket lines.
A decision has also been made regarding financial help and hardship payments due to taking strike action. Members who are facing significant hardship during the industrial action should contact their branch and/or regional council, who will have more information on this matter.
I have advised RFA and the MoD that this union remains available for meaningful talks in order resolve this dispute.
I trust this keeps you fully advised on the matter and I will, of course, update you on any further developments.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
