RESTRUCTURING OF PLAINLINE RENEWALS CONTRACTS – CARILLION

Our Ref: BR4/15/4

30 August 2017

Dear colleague

RESTRUCTURING OF PLAINLINE RENEWALS CONTRACTS – CARILLION

Voting papers will be sent out tomorrow (31st August 2017) with regards to a ballot for industrial action involving you and your colleagues on the Plainline Renewals side of Carillion, which is taking place in protest at the company’s compulsory redundancies.

If securing jobs on the LNW side of the company can be done, then there is no reason why a similar arrangement can’t be put in place on LNE, thus avoiding putting skilled railway workers on the scrap heap while utilising agency workers. It is a ridiculous situation that we have a company that will continue to provide work for its Network Rail contract provider but won’t continue with its present staff establishments. The situation does not make any sense at all and is a waste of railway skills and experience.

That is why your union is running this ballot as it is seems the only way to make management sit up and take notice of our members’ concerns. It was made clear to Carillion that, should they not implement an arrangement for LNE staff similar to that for LNW staff, then a ballot of all Plainline members would take place and this is where we stand now.

With the recent Trade Union Act making the Anti-Trade union laws even worse, it has never been harder to conduct a lawful ballot. New thresholds for turnouts mean a big vote is essential so I strongly urge all to vote Yes for Strike Action and Yes for Action short of a strike!

Please return your voting paper by no later than Thursday 14th September 2017.

Yours sincerely
