MANAGED STATION STAFF

 

As you know we are in dispute with Network Rail over their failure to table proposals to resolve the clear and undeniable problems that exist with your contract and working arrangements. Ballot papers were sent out at the end of last week and should be starting to arrive at your home addresses.

 

As is to be expected, we have been made aware that Network Rail managers have started to brief you and your colleagues with their own particular view, no doubt trying to cast doubt your union’s aims in this dispute and trying to weaken our hand in negotiations. What is absolutely clear is that station staff demand change. The best way to achieve a fairer deal for everyone is to get a clear and overwhelming vote for strike action and industrial action short of a strike. This will give your negotiating team the strongest possible hand in discussions with the company.  

 

I can advise you that we have been in discussions with the company this week on an interim proposal which would be put in place while we get a good permanent deal to follow. We have made it clear to them that they have to come up with a package that addresses the core issues which are:

 

  • Fairer salaries
  • An end to performance scores      determining your annual pay rise so you get the get the full benefit of      pay deals negotiated by RMT.
  • The Role Clarity Contract must be scrapped and a new      contract/terms & conditions agreed that fully addresses the nature and      actual hours of work, shift commitments, unsocial hours and Sunday      working;
  • New Job Descriptions for      all roles

 

A stated above, ballot papers have gone out and should have begun to arrive at your home addresses. If you or any of your colleagues have not received one by Monday 20th July 2020  please contact the union urgently via info@rmt.org.uk  or the National Helpline on 0800 376 3706, and a replacement will be sent out to you first class.

 

The ballot closes at First Post on Tuesday 28th July 2020

 

Your contract is totally unsuited to the 27/4 customer facing role you do. At the moment your contract says you work Monday to Saturday and do a 35 hour week but you are expected to work a minimum 18 Sundays a year for free!! Station staff across the railway industry, almost without exception, get paid either at a standard rate or enhanced rate if they work more than their contracted hours.

 

This is a dispute we didn’t want but Network Rail’s failure to address our concerns over your terms and conditions, and there is dire need for them to drastically improve, has forced us to escalate matters. We need your support to send a clear message to Network Rail that you will no longer be treated as second-class employees. With this country’s harsh anti trade union laws it is vitally important that we get a high turnout and a big Yes vote for both questions in order to get the fairer deal we seek. I therefore urge members to vote ‘Yes’ for both  Strike Action Industrial Action short of a strike.

 

Discussions will continue with the company and I will keep members fully informed of any further developments.
