ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – ARRIVA RAIL NORTH
Firstly, I would like to congratulate and thank you all for your support during this dispute. The action you have all taken has been phenomenal and the determination you have shown is a true testament to the whole trade union movement.
You will have no doubt seen the company’s latest attempts at dividing the workforce and their clear disingenuous comments on the union’s position. Our position has not changed and every time we enter negotiations our representatives negotiate in line with union policy. There is a simple solution to this dispute and it involves the company guaranteeing a safety critical guard with full competencies on their trains. Management seem to be happy to tell everyone that ‘talking costs nothing’ but they seem to forget that at recent ACAS talks the company walked away. It’s about time Arriva Rail North start taking this dispute seriously and back up their statements. Talking does cost nothing, so it’s about time management get around the table and resolve this dispute.
It is clear that the company are pushing through DOO, ignoring staff and passenger safety in the process. The actions of Arriva shows the utter contempt management has for you and your colleagues and this is totally unacceptable.
The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and believes the only way to force the company to get around the table is to take further industrial action. Therefore, you and your colleagues are instructed to not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-
• 0001 Hours and 2359 Hours on Saturday 27th October 2018
• 0001 Hours and 2359 Hours on Saturday 3rd November 2018
• 0001 Hours and 2359 Hours on Saturday 10th November 2018
Furthermore, The National Executive Committee has referred the matter of a Hardship Fund to our finance sub-committee. Information will be circulated to you all as soon as it is available. I urge you all to continue standing shoulder to shoulder during this dispute. We must continue to stand firm and send the company a clear message that we will not comprise safety for their profits. I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will keep you updated on these matters.
