ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – ARRIVA RAIL NORTH

Further to my letter of 6th November 2018, members will recall that we had written to Arriva Rail North correcting them over their misleading statements about our position in this dispute and our willingness to meet for meaningful talks. The company responded to our correspondence this week but they continue to fail to answer the fundamental questions we are asking so our response today was as follows : -

Dear David,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – ARRIVA RAIL NORTH

Thank you for your letter dated 14th November 2018, in relation to the above matter. I am extremely disappointed that you have decided not to address or answer the question my union put to you.

I have received reports from my members and representatives that you are visiting RMT picket lines and are informing my members that you have asked the DfT to set aside the respective clause (18) which mandates your company to introduce DOO on at least 50% of your train services. I am dismayed that you are approaching RMT pickets in this way and not responding to the union when we have sought a response from you on this very issue.

Therefore, I ask that you now provide the union with a formal response on this issue or at the very least inform the union as to when you will be in a position to formally respond to this question. Furthermore, in your letter you have quoted arrangements that we have made with other Train Operating Companies, stating that you will provide the same guarantees. I now ask that you confirm that you will guarantee that each and every Arriva Rail North train will only operate if there is a safety critical conductor on board.

I would like to reiterate that my union is always available for talks.”

From day one the union has left no one in any doubt what our position is in this dispute. We demand that every Arriva Rail North train will only operate if there is a safety critical conductor on board. Instead of properly engaging with us, ARN have set about trying to muddy the waters making misleading statements about our position and have failed to answer direct questions. They really need to stop with all the nonsense and get round the table for meaningful talks.

The outstanding unity and solidarity of members throughout this dispute has been nothing short of incredible. You and your colleagues have set an inspirational example to the whole Trade Union movement and I urge you all to continue the fight to save the role of the guard on the next day of action tomorrow.
